History of Bentonite in Georgia

Bentonite clay was first discovered in Georgia in 1913, and the first official bentonite deposit was opened in 1946 in the village of Mtispiri, Ozurgeti, under the leadership of Aleksandre Tvalchrelidze and Davit Sharashidze. Through extensive research, it was determined that the bentonites of the Mtispiri group belong to the early post-volcanic genetic subtype of hydrothermal deposits. Due to their qualitative and technological characteristics, chemical composition, unique properties, and diverse applications, the Askan bentonite clay group is considered one of the best in the world.
